In this varied position, you'll provide laboratory assistance and some field-based technical support for various research projects. Specific tasks will include:
- General molecular biology work including the extraction and quantification of DNA from plant material, PCR analysis, and agarose gel electrophoresis.
- The analysis of existing breeding programmes, as well as contributing to the implementation of new breeding programmes.
- Field work to collect samples when required.
What are we looking for?
- A relevant tertiary qualification is critical, as is the knowledge of the principles of breeding.
- Experience with real-time RT-PCR, high resolution melt (HRM) curve analysis, and DNA sequencing is preferred.
- High on our wish list is a proven understanding and experience in the application of molecular biology methods and techniques.

The Infectious Disease Research Centre, Massey University is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship through the New Zealand Biological Heritage National Science Challenge project Biosecurity Network Interventions. This is an excellent opportunity for a student wanting to learn cutting-edge network and evolutionary modelling techniques, with real world applications. The student will become an integral member of a national research team undertaking high profile projects of importance to biosecurity in New Zealand.
This is one of a number of PhD projects that aim to develop network models for a pests and pathogens, and then use these models to evaluate strategies for reducing transmission. The focus of this project is the protection human and animal health through the development of novel biosecurity interventions in farmed livestock systems. The candidate will join the Infectious Disease Research Centre at Massey University, Palmerston North and be supervised by Professor Nigel French FRSNZ (mEpiLab) and Dr Carolyn Gates (EpiCentre).
The economy of New Zealand is highly dependent on the health of its livestock populations. Further, the transmission of zoonotic pathogens from farmed animals to humans, through food, water and environmental contact, continues to be a major public health concern. In order to maintain global trade markets, and protect public health, we must develop new approaches to prevent the incursion of exotic diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), minimise the impact of endemic diseases, such as bovine tuberculosis (BTB) and bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVD) and reduce the transmission of zoonotic pathogens. Farming practices have created many opportunities for disease to spread between herds through the movements of animals, vectors, personnel, and equipment. With a better understanding of how these contacts and behaviours shape pathogen evolution and transmission dynamics, it will be possible to design more cost-effective strategies for allocating limited control resources.
The project represents a timely opportunity to explore the relationship between networks and pathogen population structure, using whole genome sequencing, to better understand the epidemiology of important livestock diseases. Models will be extended to consider the importance of the national and local structure of livestock networks in New Zealand on the predicted distribution and genetic relatedness of fully characterised pathogens. Using existing data, the project will start by examining the network of contacts in the poultry industry and its impact on the transmission and evolution of Campylobacter jejuni. Further work will depend on these initial studies and the development of modelling methods, with the potential to consider other pathogens in other livestock systems (e.g. BVD in cattle). Improved models will provide better decision support for managing incursions, outbreaks, and endemic diseases in livestock and human populations.
This 3-year scholarship provide an annual stipend of NZD$28,000 a year tax-free, covers full university fees and includes additional support towards operating expenses. The successful candidate will be based at Massey University Palmerston North, New Zealand.
Qualifications and relevant experience
Applicants for this project should hold a Masters degree in a relevant area, preferably with interest in epidemiology, modelling and microbial genetics. The position is open to applicants of any nationality, provided they have strong spoken and written English skills, can obtain a student visa, and are eligible for admission to the PhD program.

A postdoctoral position is available with Professor Peter Dearden at the University of Otago’s Laboratory for Evolution and Development. Our group addresses questions of evolutionary biology in natural and agricultural systems.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and driven Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team. Your research will focus on understanding the genetic basis of vital insect biocontrol systems in New Zealand. These systems, based on parasitoid wasps, suppress two major grassland pest species and are subject to strong evolutionary pressures.
In this project you will use genetics and genomics to understand the impact of the parasites on the evolution of the host and the development of resistance. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with ecologists Professor Stephen Goldson and Professor Jason Tylianakis as part of a major programme based at the Bio-Protection Research Centre (bioprotection.org.nz).
Applicants must have:
• a PhD in genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology or a related discipline
• experience working with genome data.

These are salaried teaching positions in which the appointee will be undertaking full-time PhD studies. Postdoctoral Fellow – Theory of Nanomaterials
2 years fixed term at Victoria University of Wellington
The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow is to perform research within the electronic structure in nanomaterials group investigating the electronic properties of new materials assembled from superatomic clusters. The goal will be to develop a theoretical framework for the description of superatomic assemblies, based on computational methods of condensed matter physics and quantum chemistry, and to use this to predict the emergent properties of such materials. This will require the use of density functional theory programme packages and the development of new codes to analyse and interpret data within the appropriate theoretical framework, in collaboration with the condensed matter theorists within the institute. It will be necessary to take a lead in all aspects of the theoretical development and application, and to develop both computational and theoretical capabilities.
Postdoctoral Fellow – Superconductivity
2 years fixed term at Victoria University of Wellington
The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow is to perform research within the superconductivity team at Robinson Research Institute in association with Dr Tallon and Dr Williams initially directed at high-pressure studies on cuprates and pnictides using existing clamp cells for use in a SQUID magnetometer, diamond anvil cells for spectroscopy and a piston-cylinder device for transport studies. In addition we are seeking to initiate (with Dr Stuart Wimbush in the Institute) the development of ionic-liquid field-effect devices that can be used to dope a variety of electronic materials such as cuprates, pnictides and organic/inorganic hybrid materials. This will require construction of devices to be mounted on existing cryostat platforms and we also wish to explore the potential for combining the two techniques, pressure and field effect gating, as these offer two independent methods to control doping state. In this way we hope to decouple doping effects from intrinsic pressure effects – an ongoing challenge.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Functional Nanostructures

These projects will explore the use of proteins and peptides as scaffolds to build functional nanostructures. Self-assembling proteins will be explored as scaffolds onto which polymers and inorganic materials will be assembled in order to develop specific optical, electrical or magnetic functionality. The projects will involve wide collaboration across the Institute and a wide range of skills will be needed. The projects will involve protein engineering, synthetic polymer and peptide chemistry, electrochemistry, clean room fabrication methods and advanced microscopy. Candidates should have excellent experimental skills in physical or synthetic chemistry or in protein engineering and should be willing to learn a wide range of new skills outside their core discipline.

• Responsible to ensure that all testing is thorough and complete and meets the required standards at all times.
• Communication of any issues in a timely manner.
• Assist and collaborate with other members of the Testing Team.
• Negotiate acceptance criteria.
• Assist with providing test strategies and advice in the preparation of suitable testing scenarios and data.
• Participate in resolving issues arising during testing.
• Assist in business procedure testing.
• Provide assistance, QA services etc. for UAT, as required.

• Work closely with senior members of the Testing Team.

• Facilitate strong communication channels between the team and key IT and business contacts.
• Implement and maintain a personal development program that focuses on maintaining currency and enhancing skills in the areas of Information Technology.
• Be proactive in identifying own training needs.
• Maintain a reading program that covers recent developments in IT and testing/training methodologies techniques.
• Any other duties as required.
A tertiary qualification or equivalent experience is a requirement.
A software testing qualification (e.g. ISTQB) is desirable.
• Experience in or knowledge of software development life cycles
• Experience in testing changes to business systems and applications as well as system performance issues.
• Previous experience in testing roles is desirable.
• Experience in software testing methodologies and strategies is desirable.
• Current knowledge of technology solutions and trends.
• A working knowledge of SQL and databases is an advantage
